Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN EDWARD WRIGHT 38586. Born 1889, the youngest of three children and only son, of John and Martha Wright. The family lived at 23 Cuthbert Street in Hull. John’s mother died when he was young and his elder sister Eliza took on the role of matriarch. John was working as a Flour Packer when war came, but enlisted to fight with the Pals and shipped out to France. A member of “C” Company, John was killed in action on 12th April 1918 somewhere close to the ruins of Bethune in northern France. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial to those men who have no known grave. He was 29 years old. In one of those darkly ironic twists, John’s father earned his living as a Gravedigger. A Gravedigger who lost his only son yet had no opportunity to bury him in a manner befitting such a sacrifice.
