Ashworth, Harry

BORN PENDLETON,WIGAN 1892. SON OF ANN & HARRY ASHWORTH – 11 IRWELL STREET, ECCLES, LANCS. ENLISTED IN THE ARMY IN 1911. EX 1157 4TH BN. WEST YORKSHIRE REGIEMNT. JOINED THE MERCHANT NAVY. LOST AT SEA ON 28/08/1917, AGED 25. HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY WAR RECORDS.

SS Hidalgo, built by Northumberland shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Newcastle in 1908 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman Wilson Line Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 4271 tons.
On August 28th, 1917, Hidalgo, on a voyage from Manchester to Arkhangelsk with general cargo & munitions, was sunk by the German submarine U-28 (Georg Schmidt), 120 miles NE1/2N from NordKapp. 15 persons were lost.
