BORN YORK 1889. SON OF CHARLES HENRY BATCHELOR (1837-1911) AND LOUISA COPLEY (1857-1917), OF 17, WILLOW STREET, YORK. ONE OF 12 CHILDREN. HE WAS A SAILOR AND WORKED AS A SAILOR AND LIGHTERMAN. RESIDED AT GOOLE (1911 CENSUS).

JAMES MARRIED ELSIE GERTRUDE DIXON, ON 28/06/1914, AT ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, HULL. THEY LIVED AT 14, RUSSELL TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL  (WAR PENSION & ARMY ADDRESS). THEY HAD A SON, JAMES REGINALD BATCHELOR (1914-1973), WHO WAS BORN ON 24/12/1914.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 16/11/1915, AGED 26 YEARS AND 7 MONTHS. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 140 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION, AN OLD SCAR ON STOMACH AND A SCAR ON HIS UPPER LEFT ARM.

HE SERVED WITH THE 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL PALS). TRAINED AS A BOMBER. SENT TO FRANCE, ON 02/06/1916. KILLED IN ACTION 27/02/1917, AGED 27. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 07/06/1917.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, WITH HIS BROTHER IN LAW, (ELSIE’S BROTHER), PERCIVAL RAYMOND DIXON, KILLED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 13/07/1915, AGED 21. THEY BOTH LEFT THEIR ARMY EFFECTS TO ELSIE AND HER TWO CHILDREN AT THIS ADDRESS.

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, VICTOR BATCHELOR, 21222, 10TH YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT WAS KILLED AT LOOS, ON 26/09/1915, AGED 19. HE LIVED IN YORK WITH ANOTHER BROTHER DENNIS AND IS NOT RECORDED ON THE HULL MEMORIALS. HIS MOTHER, LOUISA COPLEY ALSO DIED IN 1917, AGED 60.

HIS SURVIVING BROTHERS, WERE CHARLES AND DENNIS, IN YORK. HIS MARRIED SISTERS ALSO LIVED OUTSIDE HULL.
