BORN GASCOIGNE, YORKSHIRE 1896. SON OF WILLIAM & ANN MARIA BATTY, 77 BRIGHTON STREET (1911) AND 67 MANCHESTER STREET (1915). HIS BROTHER WILFRED SERVED IN FRANCE AT THE ABOVE ADDRESS. ENLISTED HULL. SENT TO FRANCE ON 26/05/1916. WOUNDED ON 23/07/1916. KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/11/1916. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM ON 3/03/1917, 4/06/1917, 13/11/1917, 13/5/1918 & 13/11/1919.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN BATTY 9/21089. Born in 1896, John was one of seven children to William and Annie Batty of 67 Manchester Street, Hull. A Grocer’s Manager by trade he enlisted at City Hall on 18th December 1915 originally joining the 9th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He was transferred to the 12th EYR, becoming a Hull Pal on 10th June 1916, as part of the reinforcements sent to plug holes in their ranks caused by three months of attrition in the trenches of the Western Front. John’s war lasted five months. He was killed in action at Serre on 13th November 1916 during the last doomed attack of the Somme campaign and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 19 years old.
