Bedford, Arthur

Born Hull, 18/04/1892. Son of Herbert Colley Bedford (1864-1912) and Kate Shaw (1867-1957), of Hull. He had three brothers and four sisters. A seaman, boarding at 3 Town Hall Street, Great Grimsby, with his brother Harold and sister in law, Lizzie.

He Served in the Royal Naval Reserve and was Skipper of the HMT ‘Remarko’ mined off Lowestoft by UC-4, on 03/12/1916. His elder brother, Herbert Colley Bedford, fought for the Canadians.

His brother Harold Bedford, also born in Hull, served as a Sergeant, in the 6th Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed at Gallipoli, on 09/08/1915, aged 25. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial to the missing. He had served in the army for just 357 days and married for only four months.

“Remarko”, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1914 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 245 tons. On December 3rd, 1916, Remarko was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-4 (Hans Howaldt), off Lowestoft. 12 persons were lost.
