Bettney, Horace

Born Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, 15/12/1891. Son of Sam Horace Bettney (1870-1951) and Emily Ann Horton (1872-1928), of 24, Johnson Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield. Son of a coal miner. He had one brother Bertie and one sister, Amelia Ellen Bettney.

Nine years a coal miner, employed by Smith’s Woodcutting, Thorncliffe.”

Described in his military  and medical records, as 5 foot, 6 inches tall, 39-42 inch chest, Blue eyes and Brown hair, “Good” Military character, “hardworking and well trusted.

Resided at 24, Johnson Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield (Army Address) and 4, Vancouver Crescent, Alexandra Street, Hull (War Pension address).

He enlisted on 15/11/1914. Posted to France, on 07/04/1915 to 04/05/1915 and 14/10/1915 to 07/07/1916. Served as Private, 20676, 9th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Wounded at the Somme, on 1st July 1916, with gunshot wounds to the head and right knee. Discharged on 08/08/1917. He had served in the army for 2 years and 237 days. Awarded the Silver Wound Badge ( No: 235069).

He died in Hull, on 15/03/1919, aged 27.
