BORN HULL 1887. SON OF WILLIAM ALEXANDER BIRRELL AND MARTHA ELLEN BIRRELL, OF 44 PARK STREET, HULL. (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF AN ENGINEER.

A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER. HE ENLISTED IN LIVERPOOL. WENT TO FRANCE, ON 22/10/1914, WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. SERVED AS A SERGEANT, IN THE 1ST LINCOLNSHIRE REGIEMENT. KILLED AT YPRES, ON 02/01/1915, AGED 28. COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES, MENIN GATE MEMORIAL.
HIS BROTHER, 2ND LIEUTENANT, ALBERT BIRRELL, ROYAL AIR FORCE, WAS KILLED ON 18/09/1918, AGED 24. THEY LEFT THEIR ARMY EFFECTS TO THEIR FATHER, WILLIAM BIRRELL, A RETIRED ENGINEER, AT 44 PARK STREET, HULL (PROBATE ADDRESS).
