BORN HULL, DRYPOOL, 1889. SON OF HENRY J. BOWES (1861-1931) & MARY JANE WALLER (1863-1944), OF 12 MORRILL STREET, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL. HE HAD AN OLDER BROTHER CALLED ROBERT AND TWO SISTERS ANNIE AND OLIVE. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A NAVAL DRAUGHTSMAN.

HE ENLISTED IN SHEFFIELD, JOINING THE SHEFFIELD PALS BATTALION. HE WENT MISSING IN ACTION ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HIS BODY WAS NEVER FOUND. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/04/1917. HE WAS AGED 27 AND UNMARRIED.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER, MARY. HIS BROTHER ROBERT, SERVED WITH THE 26TH TYNESIDE IRISH AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 12/05/1917, AGED 31.
