Butcher, Walter

Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1887. LIVED IN WITHERNSEA. SON OF THE LATE JAMES AND CAROLINE BUTCHER, OF 16, PRINCES STREET, WITHERNSEA, HULL. A GENERAL LABOURER. STAYING AT 11, EDINBURGH STREET, HULL, (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 19/12/1916, AGED 29. HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME, AT DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION NO.1.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
