BORN HULL 27/05/1897. SON OF EMMA WALKER (1860-1936) & ARTHUR CARTLEDGE (1863-1926), OF 20 , MAPLE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHER OF HARRY, NORA, MAUD, PERCY & CLARENCE. HE WORKED FOR THE BRIOTH GAS LIGHT COMPANY, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 2/5TH SHERWOOD FORESTER. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 12/11/1917, AGED 20. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 14/11/1917. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, EMMA.
HE IS BURIED AT LONGUENESSE (ST. OMER) SOUVENIR CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LABOUR ENDED, JORDAN PASS’D”.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
