Chapman, Albert

BORN HULL 04/09/1885. SON OF ANNIE AND JOSEPH CHAPMAN, OF 13, ALASKA STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). BEFORE JOINING THE MINE SWEEPING SECTION IN SEPTEMBER 1916, ALBERT WORKED ON HULL DOCKS. HIS WIFE ETHEL M. CHAPMAN & TWO CHILDREN LIVED AT 9, MIDDLETON AVENUE, RENSBURG STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HIS THREE BROTHERS ALL SERVED IN FRANCE. THEY WERE, L/CPL EDWARD CHAPMAN, EYR, PTE ALEX CHAPMAN, WYR, DRIVER, ROLAND CHAPMAN, RFA. ALBERT WAS LOST AT SEA ON THE TRAWLER ‘RUBY’. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 24TH OCTOBER 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. . HIS BROTHER EDWARD CHAPMAN, 28475, EYR WAS DIED OF PNEUMONIA, ON 09/10/1918, AGED 24.

HMT Ruby, built by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby in 1916 and owned at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 251 tons. On October 17th, 1917, HMT Ruby was torpedoed while assisting the sinking steamer Polvena and sunk by the German submarine UC-79 (Werner Löwe), off Ushant (Ouessant). There were no survivors, 18 persons were killed.
