Cheeseman, Roy Brompton

Born Hull 06/10/1896. Son of George Brompton Cheeseman and Louisa Jane Cheeseman, of 34, Hazelton Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. A Stock keeper. He served for 10 months in the local militia before joining. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, Kingston, Ontario, on 12th November, 1915, aged 19 years and 1 month. Described as 5 foot, 5 inches tall, 35 inch chest, brown eyes, brown hair, three teeth missing, Church of England religion. He arrived in England on the SS ‘Olymic’, on 11/04/1916. Trained on Howitzers, at Shornecliffe, Kent. Posted to France, on 06/07/1916. He was kicked by a mule, and died of wounds, on 23/08/1916, aged 19. His army effects were left to his mother, Louisa, at 55 Swanwick Avenue, Toronto, Canada. His Grandmother lived at this Hull address. His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 30/08/1916. He is buried in France. His grave, inscription, reads, “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS….”
