Clifford, William Joseph

Born Basingstoke, 1895. Son of Frank Charles Clifford and Fanny Clifford, of 131, Gosbrook Road Caversham Oxford (1911 Census) . Son of a Tailor. He had five brothers and eight sisters. He was sent to a Reformatory school in Suffolk as a child. Some of his brothers went to prison for breaking and entry.

William was working in Hull when war began.

Enlisted in Hull. Served with the 1st Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. Killed in action, on 24/05/1916, aged 21. His army effects were left to his mother. No War pension records.

His brother, Frank John Clifford, 32914, 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment was killed on 21st March 1918, age 30.

Another brother, Charles Victor Clifford, served as Gunner, 226166, Royal Garrison Artillery (Imprisoned in 1911)
