BORN ALL SAINTS, SCARBOROUGH, 15/10/1898. ONLY SON OF CHARLES COATES (1862-913) & ANNIE ELIZABETH COATES (1862-1918), OF 55 AVENUE ROAD, SCARBOROUGH. SON OF A CAB DRIVER. BROTHER TO EVA, ELSIE AND MABEL. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A TRAINEE CLERK AT HULL RAILWAY STATION. HE SERVED AS GUNNER, 123521, ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY, AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 11/12/1917, AGED 19. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ANNIE WHO DIED ON 17/06/1918. AND TO HIS STEP FATHER WALTER VICTOR TURNER, A FURNITURE BUYER.
HE IS BURIED AT MENIN ROAD SOUTH MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE”.
