BORN HOLLYM, SHEFFIELD 1891. SON OF THOMAS CHARLES COVERDALE (1847-1926) AND EMILY HARRISON (1854-1916, OF SHEFFIELD. HIS FATHER WAS A FARMER. HE HAD TEN BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

HE WAS EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. WORKED AS A DRAPERS ASSISTANT IN HULL. BOARDED AT 2 TRINITY HOUSE YARD, WHITEFRIAGATE. HE WAS A SINGLE MAN.

HE ENLISTED AT SHEFFIELD. SERVED AS CORPORAL, 12/626, 12TH YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HE HAS NO KNOWN GRAVE AND IS COMMEMORATED AT THIEPVAL HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL.

HIS BROTHER, GUNNER, THOMAS CHARLES COVERDALE, 821195, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLEY, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/03/1918, AGED 38 AND IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE

BOTH BROTHERS ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE HOLLYM WW1 MEMORIAL.
