Dunwell, John William

BORN HULL 01/07/1893. ELDEST SON OF WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER & ELIZABETH CAPES, OF 102 WALKER STREET, HULL AND 48 BEAN STREET, HULL. BEFORE ENLISTING HE WAS A SHOP PORTER AND WORKED FOR MESSRS. HARPER’S FRUITIERS ON HESSLE ROAD.

HE MARRIED MABEL ANNIE LAMBERT (1894-1953), AT HULL, IN 1915. HIS WIFE MABEL LIVED AT 7, HOLLY GROVE, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL AND 48, BEAN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD NO CHILDREN.

HE ENLISTED WITH HIS BROTHER, HARRY WHO BECAME A GUNNER IN THE RFA. JOHN DUNWELL SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE WENT TO FRANCE IN MARCH 1916 AND WAS KILLED ON THE 23RD APRIL 1917, AGED 23. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MABEL.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HE IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, GREAT WAR MEMORIAL.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 31ST MAY 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
