Fairweather, Henry

BORN HULL 11/04/1897. ONLY SON OF WILLIAM FAIRWEATHER (1861-1921) & ELIZABETH WALKINGTON (1861-1933), AT 48 BEAN STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE SISTERS. SON OF A NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY MAN. EDUCATED AT SIR HENRY COOPER COUNCIL SCHOOL. EMPLOYED AS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT AND WAREHOUSEMAN. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 3.5 INCHES TALL, 33-35 INCH CHEST, 118 LBS WEIGHT, “FAIR” PHYSIQUE, WESLYEAN RELIGION.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 01/11/1915. TRAINED AS A MOTOR DRIVER. SENT TO BRITISH EAST AFRICA IN MARCH 1916. SERVED THERE FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS. DIED OF BLACK WATER FEVER, AT MOROGORA HOSPITAL, ON 19/01/1918, AGED 21. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, ” HIS LIFE IN AFRICA WAS A VERY HARD ONE, BUT HE WAS ALWAYS A GOOD AND FAITHFUL SOLDIER, AND THE COMPANY FELT VERY SAD WHEN THEY HEARD OF HIS DEATH.” HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WILLIAM.
HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 3, PAGE 95.
