HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL.PALS. SERVED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION, IN FRANCE. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 26/08/1918, AGED 38. UNMARRIED. HE LEFT SIBLINGS, ANNIE, JANE AND WILLIAM. HE LEFT £199 IN HIS WILL TO HIS BROTHER, WILLIAM GOULDING, WHO WAS A GRAIN WEIGHER.
HIS NAME WAS LISTED ON THE HULL CITY ENGINEERS MEMORIAL, PARK STREET, HULL AND THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY MEMORIAL, AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH. HIS NAME IS ALSO INSCRIBED ON THE KIRKELLA WAR MEMORIAL AT ST ANDREWS’ CHURCH.
HE IS BURIED AT THE SOMME, AT CATERPILLAR VALLEY CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH”.
