Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FREDERICK GEORGE GREASLEY 11/541. Born in January 1890 in Headingley, Leeds Frederick was the fifth of nine children to Arthur and Margaret Greasley of 61 Argyle Street, Hull. A Milkman before the war, Frederick queued outside City Hall on 8th September 1914 to join the ranks of the fledgling Pals Battalions. He trained in Hornsea, Beverley and Ripon throughout 1915 before shipping to Alexandria in Egypt that December charged with defending Suez from the Turkish Army. They sailed for France in March 1916 and the real war started. Frederick was seriously injured in the trenches facing Beaumont Hamel and evacuated from the front line. He died of wounds on 10th May 1916 and was buried at Bertrancourt Military Cemetery; a 26-year-old Milkman, and a British soldier.
