BORN HULL 12/07/1882. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM HALL(1847-1903) AND CATHERINE JONES (1846-1931), OF 25 WATERHOUSE LANE, HULL. WORKED AS A SHOEMAKER, FOR HIS FATHER. HE HAD SERVED FOR THREE YEARS IN THE 4TH EYR TERRITORIALS, PRIOR TO THE WAR.

HE ENLISTED IN THE 30TH SIEGE BATTERY, ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY, ON 22/02/1916. ARRIVED IN FRANCE IN AUGUST 1916. KILLED IN ACTION, NEAR YPRES, ON 07/10/1917, AGED 35. BURIED IN THE SOUTH CEMETERY, MENIN ROAD.

HIS CAPTAIN WROTE, “I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH WE ALL, OFFICERS AND MEN, MISS HIM. HE WAS AN EXCELLENT WORKER AND ALWAYS CHEERFUL, AND HAS LEFT A GAP WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FILL UP. ALL THE OFFICERS, AND I AM SURE ALL THE MEN, JOIN WITH ME IN SENDING YOU OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY. HE DIED, AS HE LIVED, AS A MAN DOING HIS DUTY.”
HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4. ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL DAIL MAIL, ON 19/10/1917, WITH A PHOTOGRAPH OF JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHER.
