Harrison, George Mercer

PRIVATE, GEORGE HARRISON, 37899. Born Hull 28/03/1888, second son of Thomas Harrison (1860-1925) and Harriet Mercer (1860-1940). He married at All Saints church, Grimsby, on 20/09/1913. Husband to Ella Harrison of 5 Ada’s Avenue, Kimberley Street, Hull; They had two children, Jessie Edith, born 16/11/1914, and Norman Arthur Harrison, born 23/08/1916. He worked as a Goods Porter for the North Eastern Railway line. He married Ella at All Saint’s church, Grimsby on 20/09/1913 and had two children, Jessie Edith, born in 16/11/1915, and Norman, born in 23/08/1916. He enlisted in Hull, on 15/12/1915, with the 10th EYR. Arrived in France on 21/01/1917. He was fatally wounded at Merville, during the Spring fighting and evacuated to 54th Casualty Clearing Station where he died of wounds on 28th June 1918. George Harrison was buried at Aire Communal Cemetery; he was 31 years old. His grave inscription, reads, “HE SLEEPS WITH ENGLAND’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD”

He is listed in the Beverley Minster Memorial book and in the DuRivigny Roll of Honour, Volume 4.. His army effects were returned to his wife, Ella, after his death.
HIS NAME WAS ALSO RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST THOMAS CHURCH, CAMPBELL STREET, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN AN AIR RAID DURING WW2.
