BORN HULL 06/12/1894. SON OF RALPH (RUDOLPH) OTTO HESS (1873-1945) & MARY JANE WHYATT (1874-1967), OF 7, TEMPERENCE TERRACE, WHEELER STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE MARRIED IN 1915. HIS LATE WIFE, WAS DOROTHY MAY WOOD (1895-1918). HIS FATHER WAS GERMAN BORN. HIS MOTHER WAS FROM HULL. JAMES WAS BAPTISED AT ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH. A COOK IN THE MERCHANT NAVY, HIS SHIP WAS TORPEDOED IN 1918. DROWNED OFF THE COAST OF SPAIN, AGED 23. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL.

SS Heathpark, built by Greenock & Grangemouth Dockyard Co. Ltd. in 1917 and owned at the time of her loss by Denholm Line Steamers, Ltd. (J. & J. Denholm), Greenock, was a British steamer of 2205 tons. On October 5th, 1918, Heathpark, on a voyage from Bilbao to Maryport with a cargo of ore, was sunk by the German submarine U-91 (Alfred von Glasenapp), Bay of Biscay. 18 persons were lost. Evans Hugh 09/10/2014 My grandfather Capt Hugh Jones was Capt of the s s Heathpark his ship was torpedoed on the 5 Oct 1918.His was the omly body recovered by fishermen.He is now buried in the British Cemetery Bilbao in a CWWG.The German submarine U91 Captained by Von Glassnapp was the submarine that sank the s s Heathpark.
