Holmes, Edward Albert

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD ALBERT HOLMES 11/528. Edward was born at Beverley, in June 1892, the fifth of seven children to Horatio and Sarah Holmes of The Dog and Duck Inn, Ladygate, Beverley. A Blacksmith before the war. He queued in the long uneven lines outside Hull City Hall to become a part of the fledgling Pals Battalions, and enlisted on 8th September 1914. He never left town. Albert died of Acute Appendicitis on 7th November 1914 and is buried at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Beverley. He was a soldier for 61 days and never got to fire a shot.
