BORN HULL 31/08/1890. REAL NAME JESSE HODSON. SERVED UNDER THE NAME OF FREDERICK JOHNSON AS PER WAR PENSION RECORDS.

SON OF THOMAS BIRD HODSON (1838-1889) AND SARAH ANN BEAN (1844-1914), OF ALDBOROUGH, HULL, EAST YORKSHIRE.

HE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL NAVY, ON 11/12/1909. LIVING IN GILLINGHAM, AS A ROYAL NAVY STOKER IN 1911. A LEADING STOKER, SERVING ON HMS PRINCESS IRENE, A MINE LAYER, WHICH SANK AFTER AN INTERNAL EXPLOSION IN SHEERNESS, OFF THE ISLE OF SHEPPEY, KENT.

FREDERICK JOHNSON WAS KILLED IN THE EXPLOSION ON 27/05/1915, AGED 25, ALONG WITH 223 OTHER CREW. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL.

HIS NEXT OF KIN WAS HIS SISTER, MRS SARAH BULLIMER, OF ALDBOROUGH, HULL AND MOTHER SARAH ANN, WHO RECEIVED HIS WAR PENSION.
