LOST BY ENEMY ACTION, ON 17/05/1917, AGED 14. HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS AND ON HULL’S TRINITY NAVAL MEMORIAL. HIS OLDER BROTHER PTE, ALFRED FENTON JOHNSON, 7TH EYR WAS KILLED AT ARRAS, ON 31/03/1918, AGED 21.
SS Lewisham, built by W. Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by Watts, Watts & Co., London, was a British steamer of 2810 tons.
On May 17th, 1917, Lewisham, on a voyage from Halifax to Le Havre with a cargo of wheat, was sunk by the German submarine U-46 (Leo Hillebrand), west of Ireland. 24 persons were lost.
