BORN GRANTHAM, LINCS, 14/10/1879. ELDEST SON OF WILLIAM & MARY CALTON LEE, DUDLEY HOUSE, DUDLEY ROAD, GRANTHAM & 76 LOWGATE, HULL. EDUCATED AT GRAYS SCHOOL, ESSEX. HE MARRIED AT GRANTHAM, ON 10/09/1912. HUSBAND OF ETHEL MARION (ADCOCK) OF 64 ALBANY STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 26/08/1916. SERVED WITH THE 11TH EAST YORJKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED BY A SNIPER, CARRYING BACK A WOUNDED MEAN. HE WAS BURIED AT BAILLIEUL AND COMMEMORATED ON THE PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL. HIS DETAILS ARE RECORDED IN DE RUVIGNEY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER 2/LT HOLDSWORTH LEE, 8TH LINCS, DIED ON 31/07/1917, AGED 19.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE CARLTON LEE 27076. Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire on 14th October 1879 Carlton was the eldest of ten children to William and Mary Lee. He was educated at Gray’s School in the town and married Ethel Marion Adcock there on 10th September 1912. The couple moved north and lived at 64 Albany Street, Hull with their son Aubrey. Carlton worked as a Draper until his call-up papers came and he was made to enlist on 26th August 1916 arriving in France just before Christmas that year. Tragedy struck the family soon after. Their youngest son Holdsworth was killed in action on 31st July 1917. Carlton lost his life in front of Soyer Farm on 6th September 1918. His Commanding Officer wrote of him:
“He was killed by an enemy sniper while carrying a badly wounded man to the rear….Believe me, we will all miss him terribly here. He was a good soldier and a pal to us all.”
Carlton’s body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial; he was 38 years old, a husband and father.
