Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOSEPH HENRY LITTLE 51175. Born 11th April 1899, Joseph was the only child of Henry and Florence Little of 64 Albert Avenue, Hull. His father was a Schoolmaster and the young Joseph was sent away to boarding school. The 1911 Census finds him as a pupil at the Royal Masonic School in Bushey, Herts. I wonder if his parents grew to regret having sent their son away, for he was swept up by the war machine and returned from France a seriously wounded young man. Left to recover from his wounds at home, Joseph succumbed to them on 26th October 1918 and is buried at Western Cemetery in Hull (grave ref: 217.21109) about half a mile from his home. Having his grave so near can have been of little comfort to his parents, but when so many other families were forced into a pilgrimage to Flanders, or worse still, the thought that their son was scattered over an unknown field with nothing to mark his passing but a name etched in stone on a memorial bearing 50,000 more faceless names lost to them forever, it must have been something.
