Lowe, Sidney William

BORN HULL 1892. SON OF EMILY ABOVE. ORIGINAL HULL PAL. KILLED IN ACTION.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE SIDNEY WILLIAM LOWE 11/896. Born in July 1892, Sidney was the son of Emily Lowe of 7 Vine Terrace, Alexandra Street, Hull. A Warehouseman by trade, he enlisted at Hull City Hall on Thursday 10th September 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. One of The Originals, Sidney appears to have been the model soldier, not a single blemish on his record. He also appears to have made it through all the Pals’ major campaigns without so much as a scratch. He was a veteran of Egypt, those dark days of mud and gore on the Somme, and the bloodbath that was Oppy Wood. Unfortunately his luck ran out on 25th March 1918 as the battalion was pushed up to meet the onslaught of the German Spring Offensive. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial; he was 25 years old.
