Sigglesthorne WW1 Memorial

Born Sigglesthorne, Hull, 1893. Son of Walter Scott Mathison and Mary Eliza Mathison, of Sigglesthorne, Wassand and Seaton, East Yorkshire villages. He had two sisters and three brother. and worked as a Horse man/Waggoner, on his father’s, Goxhill Farm at Seaton. He enlisted on 12/12/1915 and was mobilized at Newcastle, on 13/05/1916. Initially joining the Royal Field Artillery, he trained with the Lancashire Fusiliers and East Lancs., Regiments. His army records describe him, as 5 foot, 8 inches tall, 38-40 inch chest size, 154 lbs weight. He transferred to the 8th King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, on 16/10/1916. Arrived in France on the following day. Died of Wounds, on 29/09/1917, aged 25. He had served in the Army for i1 year and 292 days.

He had worked on his fathers farm, with Private, William Postill, 1sy West Yorkshire Regiment,  who was two years older and who was killed on 26/08/1917. Both are commemorated on the Sigglesthorne WW! memorial, where 75 men served and eleven men died in WW1
