Maulkinson, Harwood

HMT Crownsin, the trawler which Harwood died on, was formally known as “Varel”. Pictured is the “Varel” prior to naval conversion.

BORN FLEETWOOD 1898. MOTHER WILHEMENA ELIZABETH HODGKIN ((1866-1940) AND HARWOOD MAULKINSON (1863-1932), OF 5, EDITH AVENUE, DIVISION ROAD, HULL (1801 CENSUS) AND 95, ADDISON ROAD, FLEETWOOD, LANCASHIRE (NAVAL ADDRESS). HE HAD ONE BROTHER, ROBERT HENRY MAULKINSON (1903-1979).
On May 4th, 1916, the British navy trawler HMT Crownsin was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-73 (Gustav Sieß), off Malta. 11 persons were killed.
