BORN HULL 1883. SON OF CATHERINE McCABE (1857-1909), OF 13, WILSON BUILDINGS, SOUTH STREET, HULL.

HE MARRIED BETHA ELIZA SAPCOTE, AT HULL, IN 1909. A SHIPPING LABOURER. HE LIVED WITH HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN (ELIZABETH AND HAROLD) AT 10, HESSLE PLACE, PORTER STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND BERTH’S HOME TOWN, MARKET WEIGHTON, EAST YORKSHIRE.

HE HAD SERVED IN THE TERRITORIALS AND ENLISTED IN HULL AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 08/09/1914, WITH THE 2ND EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES, ON 05/05/1915, AGED 32.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, BERTHA.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ST CHARLES’ BORROMEO CHURCH, WW1 MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
