BORN ST PANCRAS, LONDON, 1884. LIVED IN HULL. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. LEFT WIDOW FLORENCE MAUD MILLS, AT 2 KATES TERRACE, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). HE IS LISTED AS KILLED ON THE NORWOOD STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (HDM 27/10/1916).
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN WALTER MILLS 12/963. Born in 1884 in St. Pancras, Middlesex. John moved north and married Florence Maud Jones at St. Jude’s in Hull on Christmas Day 1911. The couple lived at 2 Kates Terrace, Alexandra Street. Their only son, John Jnr, arrived pretty much the same time as his father’s call-up papers. John Snr had previously served in the army as part of the Durham Light Infantry, but had since been working as a Carpenter. No matter, all men who had previously served, be that as a full-time soldier or a territorial, were expected to enlist and John did his duty, at City Hall on 6th October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. John Walter Mills was killed in action on 19th August 1916 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery; he was 32 years old.
