Mitchinson, Robert Logan

BORN FIFTH 1871. SON OF JOHN MITCHINSON, AND MARGARET ISABEL ANDERSON. SKIPPER OF THE CARGO SHIP ‘LENA’. HIS WIFE GERTRUDE PERCIVAL MITCHINSON LIVED AT THIS CWGC ADDRESS. SHIP SUNK BY SUBMARINE. HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.

SS Lena, built by Craig, Taylor & Co., Stockton in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Whitefield SS. Co. Ltd. (James, Muers & Griffin), Cardiff, was a British steamer of 2463 tons.
On April 23rd, 1917, Lena, on a voyage from Huelva to Bristol with a cargo of government stores, was sunk by the German submarine U-61 (Victor Dieckmann), southwest of the Scillies. 25 persons were lost.
