Oaktree, William Charles

BORN HULL 1898. SON OF PETER & AUGUSTA OAKTREE ABOVE. HIS BROTHER, FREDERICK OAKTREE, DIED ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘STEN’, THE SAME DAY IN ANOTHER ACTION. THEY ARE BOTH LISTED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR RECORDS.
SS Hazelwood, built by Ropner & Son, Stockton in 1904 and owned at the time of her loss by Gascony SS. Co. Ltd. (L. Walford Ltd.), was a British steamer of 3120 tons.
On October 19th, 1917, Hazelwood, on a voyage from the Tyne with a cargo of coal, was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-62 (Max Schmitz), 8 miles SxE1/2E from Anvil Point. 32 persons were lost.
