BORN HULL 1893. HE WAS ORPHANED AT AN EARLY AGE. A SINGLE MAN, WITH A SISTER SARAH WHOSE WHEREABOUTS WERE UNKNOWN. HE WAS CARED FOR BY FOSTER MOTHER MRS AMELIA W. COSGROVE, OF 18 DUNCOMBE STREET, SHEFFIELD. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY  SERVED IN THE ROYAL MARINES BAND IN 1908. DESCRIBED AS BROWN EYES, BLACK HAIR, 5 FOOT, 3 INCHES TALL, 113 LBS WEIGHT, 34 INCH. CHEST. DISCHARGED.  HE REJOINED THE ARMY ON 06/09/1911. ENLISTED HULL. SERVED IN THE 1ST YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT IN PONTEFRACT (1911 CENSUS). POSTED TO FRANCE ON 08/09/1914. WOUNDED ON 23/10/1914. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND AND RETURNED TO FRANCE ON 18/03/1915. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/05/1915, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES, MENIN GATE MEMORIAL.
