BORN HULL 1886. SON OF WILLIAM JOHN POTTAGE (1858-1939) & MARIA STAINTON (1855-1930), OF 5, EDITH TERRACE, SYMONS STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS).

SON OF A HOUSE PAINTER. HE HAD FIVE SISTERS AND TWO BROTHERS, WILLIAM AND JOHN.

HE MARRIED ON 25TH JUNE 1910. HIS WIFE CATHERINE SHARPE (1887-1959) & TWO DAUGHTERS, STELLA AND SHIELA, LIVED AT 17 ASH GROVE, PARK ROAD (HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS- 30/12/1914) AND 13, HOLMES STREET, BEECH STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WAS A HULL. POSTMAN (1911 CENSUS).

HE HAD ALSO SERVED THREE YEARS IN THE REGULAR ARMY AND WAS CALLED UP AT THE START OF THE WAR AS A RESERVIST.

HE SERVED IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/09/1914. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 16/12/1914, AT NO;13 BOULOGNE HOSPITAL, AGED 28. BURIED AT BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, CATHERINE.

HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH IS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 30TH DECEMBER 1914. *

HE IS REMEMBERED ON THE CLIFTON SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR AND ST MARYS CHURCH MEMORIAL, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.

HIS BROTHER , WILLIAM STAINTON, DIED ON THE RMS “LUSITANIA”, ON 7TH MAY 1915, AGED 38
