Louis Slimmer (1898-1918)

BORN HULL 1898. SON OF VICTOR SLIMMER (1861-1949) AND ELLEN SLIMMER (1871-1953) AT THIS CWGC ADDRESS. A JUNIOR OFFICE CLERK (1911 CENSUS) AND THEN EMPLOYED AS A TAILOR. HIS BROTHER, HARRY, JOINED UP IN 1914. LOUIS ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 19/05/1916, AGED 18 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS.

JOINED THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 3 INCHES TALL, 113 LBS WEIGHT, A CHEST SIZE OF 33.5 INCHES. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 12/12/1916. HE SERVED AT YPRES AND THE SOMME.

IN 1918, HE TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 143197, TO THE MACHINE GUN COMPANY, WHERE THE WORK WAS MORE DANGEROUS, BUT PAY WAS BETTER. RE-POSTED AS PRIVATE, 23667, TO THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/03/1918, AGED 20. HE HAD SERVED FOR 1 YEAR AND 359 DAYS.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, TO THE MISSING. HE LEFT THREE BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS AT THIS ADDRESS.
