BORN CORTON, SUFFOLK 04/01/1893. THIRD SON OF THE REVEREND, WALTER EDMUND SMITH & MARGARET ROSE VAUGHAN OF THE SCULCOATES PARISH, HULL (1901 CENSUS) & LATER THE VICARAGE, ANDOVER, HAMPSHIRE. EDUCATED HYMERS COLLEGE, HULL AND TRINITY COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE. WAS IN THE CORN TRADE BEFORE THE WAR.

ENLISTED AS A PRIVATE IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR.  SERVED AS A PRIVATE, IN EGYPT & WENT TO FRANCE 16/03/1916. WAS AT THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. COMMISSIONED ON 27/06/1917, AS 2ND LIEUTENANT, ATTACHED TO THE 8TH WEST RIDINGS REGIMENT. RETURNED TO FRANCE IN SEPTEMBER 1917. SHOT IN THE HEAD BY A SNIPER, LEADING ATTACK – POECHAPPELLE. ON 09/10/1917, AGED 24.
