BORN BEVERLEY 1888. SON OF TOM SMITH (1850-1912) MRS ELIZABETH ELVIDGE (1853-1924), OF 145 KELDGATE, BEVERLEY. HE HAD SEVEN BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. LANCE CORPORAL, FRED SMITH, 8197, 1ST SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS, WAS KILLED IN PERSIA, ON 15/06/1916, AGED 28.

HIS BROTHER TOM WAS ALSO KILLED IN THE WAR. HE WORKED AS A VALET, DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 10.5 INCHES TALL, 37 INCH CHEST. ENLISTED BEVERLEY, ON 21/10/1914. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 2611, YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND 201768, ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS. SERVED AS AN OFFICER’S BATMAN ON THE HOME FRONT HEAD QUARTERS. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 20/02/1918. WOUNDED ON 23/03/1918 AND RETURNED HOME. RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON 14/06/1918. KILLED 01/08/1918, AGED 22. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WAR MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS. BURIED A RAPERIE BRITISH CEMETERY, VILLEMONTOIRET, AISNE, FRANCE.
