BORN HORNSEA 1867. SON OF GEORGE AND MARY SMITH.

HE MARRIED IN HORNSEA, ON 26/12/1904. HIS WIFE, MARY ELLEN (RUSSELL) SMITH, AND THREE CHILDREN, LIVED AT T12 AIGBURTH AVENUE, ST GEORGES ROAD, HULL.

A FORMER SOLIDER, HE HAD RETIRED WITH LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDALS, AND GRATUITY. HE THEN WORKED AS RAILWAY CHECKER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 09/09/1914. PROMOTED IMMEDIATELY TO REGIMENTAL SERGEANT MAJOR, WITH THE 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WAS MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES, IN THE LONDON GAZETTE, ON 22/05/1917. HE RETURNED HOME ON 08/03/1918. DIED OF VASCULAR HEART DIESEASE, IN HULL, FIVE WEEKS LATER, ON 28/04/1918, AGED 51.
HE IS LISTED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE MEMORIAL.

ALSO COMMEMORATED AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.

HE IS BURIED AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. BURIAL PLOT 480/46392.

HIS WAR PENSION WENT TO HIS WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN AT 12, AIGBURTH AVENUE, ST GEORGES ROAD, HULL – 42 SHILLINGS & 11 PENCE WEEKLY FROM 18/11/1918.
