Robert Alfred Tosler

BORN HULL 1878. SON OF SAMUEL WHIP TOSLER (1838-1915) & ELIZABETH SHAW (1841-1908), OF 60 ARTHUR STREET, HULL. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS.

HE WAS WELL KNOWN ON HULL FISH DOCKS AND EMPLOYED BY HIS BROTHER, WHO WAS A ROPE MAKER AND MARINE STORE DEALER IN HULL AND LINCOLNSHIRE. HE LIVED AT 2 UNION PLACE, BOSTON, LINCS IN 1911 – WORKING AS A MINER’S ASSISTANT. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS LIVING IN HULL.

HE ENLISTED AT SUTTON SEA, LINCILNSHIRE. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 1382, HUNTINGDON CYCLISTS. ENLISTED AT THE START OF THE WAR.  SERVED WITH THE 1ST BEDFORD REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 5/09/1916, AGED 38. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS BROTHER, HENRY (1873-1950).

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 27TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
