Corporal, Robert Tungate, (1891-1917)

BORN RISEHOLME, YORKSHIRE, 1890. ENLISTED BEVERLEY. LIVED WITH BROTHER GEORGE AT 29 , BERKSHIRE STREET, HULL. A FORMER RAILWAY SHUNTER, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE BEVERLEY BOROUGH POLICE FORCE.

SON OF CHARLES & ELIZA TUNGATE. WIFE NANCY TUNGATE, BADSWORTH, PONTEFRACT, YORKS. DIED OF WOUNDS. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/09/1917. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WW1 WAR MEMORIAL.

Corporal Robert Tungate (1891-1917)

Robert was born in Rise in 1891, the seventh child of Charles and Eliza Tungate.

He married Nancy Webster in 1914. He was a member of Beverley Borough Police force.

He enlisted with the Coldstream Guards in 1915. Robert was killed in action on 31 July 1917 at the 3rd battle of Ypres

Nancy, his wife received a letter from Robert’s company officer expressing his sympathy and describing Robert as reliable, hardworking and brave. “A splendid example to the men who loved him”. Robert was the first member of Beverley Police Force to have been killed in the war. He was 26 years old.
