Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE THOMAS FREDERICK TURNER 11/1389. Born in October 1895, Thomas was the eldest of three and only son of Tom and Elizabeth Turner of 28 Carlton Street, Hull. A Shop Assistant by trade he enlisted at City Hall joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. One of the Originals, Thomas trained throughout 1915 and shipped to Egypt just before Christmas. The Pals were deployed in defence of the Suez Canal which it was feared would be vulnerable to attack from the Turkish army. Leaving Port Said bound for Marseilles on March 8th 1916, the Pals then shipped north to the trenches of the Western Front. Here Thomas played his part in all of the set-piece battles of the Pals’ war, from the Somme to Arras, Oppy Wood to Armentieres. He was killed in action on 12th August 1918 and buried in Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery; he was 22 years old and his mother’s only son.
