BORN HULL 1896. SON OF THE LATE FREDERICK & MARGARET WALLACE, OF 4 STEPHENS TERRACE, STRICKLAND STREET, HULL. A SHOP ASSISTANT (1911 CENSUS).

HE WAS A COOK ON THE TRAWLER MINESWEEPER ‘ONWARD’, WHICH WAS BLOWN UP BY SUBMARINE U-52 (HANS WALTHER), OFF ABERDEEN. HE WAS SINGLE AND HAD BEEN RAISED IN THE SPRING BANK ORPHANAGE FROM EIGHT YEARS OF AGE. HE DIED ON 11/07/1916, AGED 21. NO CWGC RECORDS?
HIS DEATH & ADDRESS WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 19TH JULY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS BROTHERS, GEORGE, SERVED IN THE EYR, AND FRANK ON MINESWEEPERS.

HMT Onward, built by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby in 1908 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 266 tons.
