Watson, Tom

Born Rosedale Abbey, Pickering, North Yorkshire, on 22/06/1873. Son of Tom Bailey (1845-1826) and Sarah Watson;

Husband of Mary Jane (Thorp) Watson, of  34 Market Place, Beverley and later 19, Avondale Terrace, Shirebrook, Mansfield.

Educated at Middlesbrough. A former labourer. He joined the army at Richmond, Yorkshire, in 1895, aged 19. Served with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. Described as 5 foot, 9 inches tall, 140 lbs weight, 36-39 inch chest size, light grey eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion, tatto of “TW” on back of left wrist. After two years service, he deserted and was sent to prison.

He married at Middlesbrough, on 20/09/1913. His wife was from Beverley and they moved there.

He enlisted on 20/08/1914 at the outbreak of war. Served with the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment. Posted to France, in January 1915. Invalided home on the 9th March 1915, with Rheumatism and a wounded knee. Died of chronic convulsions, as a result of his war service, at home, in Beverley, on 14/09/1915, aged 42. He is buried at St Martins Church, Beverley. His grave inscription, reads, “HIS TOILS PAST WORK IS DONE HE FOUGHT THE FIGHT THE VICTORY WON”

His army effects were left to his widow, who re-married a Private, H. Clark, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, on 23/12/1916 and moved to Mansfield, Notts.
