Private, George Henry Eldon, No. 19332, 6th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred to the Labour Corps, Reg No. 398086. Previously served in the South African Campaign.
Born: Beverley 1874. Son of Charles Eldon & Sarah Ann Scruton, of Keldgate, Beverley. Son of a cow keeper. He had two brothers and three sisters. George married Ellen Boulton, at Beverley, on 18/11/1899. They lived at 114 and 125 Keldgate, Beverley and had two sons, Fred and George.
A former cow keeper. He enlisted in the 3rd Imperial Yeomanry, on 12/02/1901, aged 26. Served in the 9th Company, during the Boer War. Discharged on 30/08/1902. Worked as a Farm Hand (1911 Census). His brother Fred served with the Royal Engineers in South Africa.
He re-enlisted at Beverley, on 30/05/1915, aged 40. His army records describe him as 5 foot, 7 inches tall, 35-37 inch chest, and of “Good Character”.
He served with the 6th East Yorkshire Pioneers, in the Dardenelles, from 21/09/1915. Posted to France on 03/07/1916. Transferred to the Labour Corps, on 17/09/1917 and returned to England on 31/08/1918. He was based in Nottingham when the war ended. His war Pension stated that he had 20% disability.
He died of paralysis and insanity, on 14th June 1921, aged 46. He was given a full Military funeral. Commemorated: Beverley, St. Martin’s Cemetery, Ref: C. E. 123 19.
