BORN SOUTHAMPTON 17/10/1891. SON OF SAMUEL McHARD (1866-1946) & ELIZABETH CALLAGHAN (1868-1936), OF 28 MERSEY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HIS PARENTS WERE SCOTTISH. HIS FATHER WAS A SHIP YARD COULKER, WHO WORKED IN IRELN AND AT BARROW ON FURNESS BEFORE ARRIVING IN HULL.
ANDREW MARRIED AT MAIDENHAED IN 1915. HIS WIFE HILDA ETHEL EMMETT (1897-1978), LIVED AT 25 MOFFAT STREET, MAIDENHEAD, BERKSHIRE. THEY HAD A DAUGHTER, KATHERINE.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVING WITH THE 9TH KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, AT THE 5TH CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, ON THE SOMME, ON 13/04/1916. AGED 26. BURIED AT CORBIE COMMUNAL CEMETRY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “ONE OF SCOTLAND’S BRAVE SONS.”

HIS BROTHER, DONALD McHARD, SERVED IN THE CAMERON HIGHLANDERS AND WAS WOUNDED IN THE WAR.
