St Charles Borromeo Church, Hull – WW1 Memorial
St Charles Borromeo Church is Hull’s oldest and largest Roman Catholic church, located at Jarratt Street, in Hull city centre. Opened on 29th July 1829, it was enlarged in May 1835 and re-modelled in a Classical Revival style, in 1894. It boasts an opulent Baroque interior, full of light, and colour and is still serving the Hull community after 195 years.
At the entrance to St Charles Borromeo, is the triptych, war memorial panel, listing the dead of the First and Second World Wars, flanking an icon of the Our Lady and Child.
The 1914-18 side of the Memorial Board, lists 168 names, in four rows, in alphabetical order. Ninety men served in the local East Yorkshire Regiments, including 21 men who died with the Hull Pal battalions. Many other regiments are also represented. There are also nine Sailors listed on the WW1 memorial. They include, Privates, Guardsmen, Troopers and Sappers. Most of the men were junior ranks. There are only four Officers, eight Sergeants, and one Petty Officer on the St Charles Borromeo memorial.
The 168 names include at least thirteen sets of brothers, a father and son and 24 teenagers. 76 of the men have no known grave. Some of these are commemorate at Ypres (13 men), Thiepval, (14), Arras (8), Tyne Cot (6) and the Helles Memorial, Turkey (6). Sailors lost at sea are commemorated at London’s Tower Hill Memorial and the Royal Naval Memorials at Chatham and Portsmouth. Most men are buried in France and Belgium. Thirteen of the men are buried in Hull.
The casualties accelerated as the war progressed. Five men died in 1914; 38 men, in 1915; 37 men, in 1916, 34 men, in 1917; 43 men, in 1918 and six men died post war. Three men died on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Five men died on 13th November 1916 (The battle of Serre) and four men died on 3rd May 1917 (The Battle of Oppy Wood). Where known, the average age of the soldiers killed was 27. The average age of sailor deaths was 30 years old. The youngest death was 15. The oldest casualty was aged 54.
Most of the men were born in Hull and Yorkshire. However, some men were born in Lancashire and elsewhere. John Costello, Thomas Groak and George Herbert Billet were born in Ireland. Albert Joseph Keightley was born in Paris, to a French mother, who then moved to Hull.
Many men were educated at the local Pryme Street, Catholic school, and were baptised and married at St Charles Borromeo. Often their parents and siblings were married in the same Catholic Church. It is assumed that all the men listed were Roman Catholic.
Many men lived locally, but most of their homes were destroyed during WW2 or during post war reconstruction. Few of their addresses remain today.
The most striking feature of the St Charles Borromeo Memorial is the great loss of life. The lists of dead, include 13 sets of brothers. Families like Farrell, Gould, Grayson, Haran, Jollands, Marsh, McDonald, Roberts, Steward, Walsh and Wood families, lost two sons in the 1914-1918 war. In the case of the Harran and Wood brothers, they were only sons. The Brennen and Toalster families lost three sons.. Herbert and Bernard Clark recorded on the St Charles Borromeo memorial were father and son.
Many more names that could have been included on the St Charles Borromeo list. For example, there were other men on the memorial that also lost brothers, but for unknown reasons, these were omitted. These include:-
Private, William Grayburn, 10th EYR, who died of wounds, on the 26th September 1918, aged 22, (Brother of George and John Grayburn listed on the St Charles Memorial).
Private, George Herbert Hart, WYR, killed on 27th March 1918, aged 19, (brother of John Hart) is not on the memorial, even though he shared the same home address..
Private, James Pepper, 13th EYR, killed on 4th November 1917, aged 21 (brother of Henry Pepper, in the memorial)
Seaman, George Patrick Hackett, lost at sea, on 30/08/1917, aged 18 (brother of Christopher John Hackett)
Private, John Larvin, killed on 11/01/1915 (brother of James Larvin on the memorial).
Private, John Mcloughlin, who died of wounds, in France, on 31/03/1918 and Luke McLoughlin, who died in Hull, in 1918, (brothers of Patrick McLoughlin) are not on the memorial, even though they all lived at the same home address.
Corporal, William Thomas Badger, killed at Gallipoli, on 22/08/1915, aged 29 (brother of Thomas Vincent Badger)
Private, Robert Harrison, 1st EYR, killed on 1st July 1916, aged 24, another missing brother on the St Charles Borromeo memorial..
Samual Laughton, killed at the Somme in 1916 and another brother, Frederick Laughton, died in Hull, in 1918 (brothers of Frank Laughton on the memorial).
James Durkin killed in 1916 and another brother, Robert James Durkin, killed in 1918, (brothers of William Durkin, on the Memorial).
Private, Anthony Walsh, discharged from the army with mania and died in Beverley Asylum on 22nd June 1916, and his brother, Private, Joseph Edward Walsh, 13th EYR, died a Prisoner of war in Germany, on 2nd January 1917. (Brothers of John Walsh, listed on the Memorial).
Private, William Ryan, 1st EYR, killed on 27th October 1914, aged 28.(Brother of John and Joseph Ryan, both listed on the memorial and killed in 1917)
Private, Charles Henry Carr, 6th EYR, discharged after Gallipoli, died in Hull, on 20th November 1917. His brother Private, Percy Carr, EYR, another discharged serviceman, died in 1919, aged 33. Another brother, Gunner, Albert Carr, RGA, was discharged in 1915 and died in Hull, in 1920, aged 29. (Three more brothers of Frederick Carr not listed on the memorial).
Similarly, John Ernest Mercer is included on the Memorial, but not his three other brothers, who all lived locally. These were, Lance Corporal, Alfred Shaw Mercer, 1st West Yorkshire Regiment, killed on the 27th May 1916, aged 25. Private, George Mercer, 1/5th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, killed on the 10th April 1918 aged 18, and Private, James Mercer, 10th EYR, who died of wounds, on 11th September 1918, aged 29. John Mercer’s wife, also lost a brother, Private, Harry Watson, at Gallipoli, on 27/08/1915, aged 19. Apart from John Ernest Mercer, none of these casualties are recorded on the St Charles Borromeo war memorial.
Private, James Newlove, who was discharged and died of shell shock is another unrecorded casualty.(Brother of Alfred Newlove on the memorial)
If these brothers were missing from the St Charles Borromeo Memorial, there could have been many other men omitted. There may be plausible reasons for this. Not everyone agreed with war memorials, believing money would have been better spent on returning survivors. Not everyone attended Church to know about the church memorial. They have preferred to remembered their dead in other ways, like the many street memorials and work place Rollos of Honour, in Hull . Families may have moved from the area, or were unavailable, when people visited to collect names. Also, if a contribution was required to include a memorial name, they may not have been able to pay. It is unclear how St Charles collected and verified its memorial names. While there may be some missing names to the St Charles Borromeo Memorial, all Hull’s WW1 casualties are recorded on ww1hull.com
Hidden within the long list of names, are the families that lost their only sons. William Gilbert Bailey, Arthur Croll, John Megginson Harrison, Albert Keightley, Michael John Kelly, John Robert Kiddingham, James Naven, George Frederick Paden, James Wilson, Michael Lydon, MM, John McGann, and Edward McNulty were all only sons.
Private, John Ryan, 13th East Yorkshire regiment killed on 14th August 1916, aged 22 was an only child.
Many men on the Memorial had been previously wounded before they were killed. For example, Sergeant, John Cox had been wounded twice. Alfred Hargreaves, the nephew of the Hull Lord Mayor, and Henry Joseph Damrell had both been wounded three times, before they died. Also, Lance Corporal, Joseph Michael Boland, 1/4th EYR, was wounded three times, but while recovering in England, developed Pneumonia and died on 23rd May 1917, aged 22.
Many St Charles men died in horrific ways. For example, Herbert Sidney Hick, died of severe burns after being rescued at sea. Andrew Anderson, died after his leg was amputated, John William Jinks died losing his left arm. Albert Keightley, was blown up by a trench mine. Frederick Clutterbrook, died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen. James Wilson, was shot in the lung, Thomas Groak and Joseph McDonald, were both gassed, Thomas Byron Keating was wounded in the face, left leg and left hand. Thomas McNally, was wounded in the face and scalp. Thomas Brown and William Albert Lowe, also died of multiple wounds.
Other deaths, on the Memorial, include, Edward Henry Nozedar, killed by a sniper aged 19.
Henry Nolan and Joseph Thomas Walsh, who died as prisoners of war, in Germany.
George Frederick Paden, who died of Heat stroke, in Iraq.
John William Long, drowned in the North Sea Convoys.
Patrick Doyle was “murdered” on the Canadian hospital ship, HMS “Llandovery Castle”, which was torpedoed on 27th June 1918. The U boat U86, then surfaced to machine gun survivors and ram life boats. Some 234, Doctors, female nurses and medical staff were killed in this incident. This war crime was prosecuted (along with many others) at the Leipzig War Trials, in 1921, but the atrocity, is largely forgotten today. The U Boat Captain fled Germany after the war and avoided prosecution.
Alfred Dillion, died of pneumonia, in 1919, one of millions of Influenza victims towards the war’ end.
William Joseph Snee, was killed after only three days at the front. James Tymon who had discharged from the army, re-enlisted again. He was killed by a shell, with 12 others, while returning to the Dressing Station. James Leonard Jollands, enlisted underage and was killed aged 19.
The death of these men left many fatherless children. For example, Corporal, George Cox, and Lance Corporal, James Andrew Foss, both had six young children. James and John O’Hara, both had five children. Private, Thomas Mahoney and Private, George Wyatt, also left five children when they died. In an era of little state provision, their widows must have endured great hardship to survive in the post war years.
While many more men could have been added to this Memorial, some names are a mystery why they were included at all. For example, Bryon Thomas Keating, was born and raised in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada and died fighting for the 2nd Columbia Mounted Rifles, in 1915. His connection with Hull is unclear, but someone included him on the St Charles memorial. Another mystery, is Francis Philip Groak who didn’t enlist when war began, but emigrated to America in 1915. He died of Influenza, in Philadelphia, in 1918, aged 23. He had joined the United States Army only six weeks before his death, and saw no active service. His father, who was a prominent Hull Surgeon, Town Councillor, and devout Catholic, perhaps influenced his inclusion on the St Charles Borromeo war memorial. Thomas Brennan was a discharged soldier, who survived the war and married at St Charles Borromeo in 1918. His whereabouts after this are unknown, but he was included on the memorial. Thomas Dakin is listed on the memorial, (with his brother, Michael Dakin), even though he lived in Leeds and was buried in Leeds. Similarly, H. House and T.J. Knight left no war pension or Census records to suggest why they were included on the St Charles Memorial. It is therefore unknown how the casualties listed on the St Charles Borromeo memorial were compiled or verified.
Most of the men on the memorial have a local catholic connection, either attending the Pryme Street Catholic School, or being baptised and married in the St Charles Borromeo church. Often the men’s parents and siblings were also married at St Charles Borromeo Church. Many men on the Memorial, are of Irish heritage, with parents and siblings born in Ireland. This is probably explained by Hull’s attempt to build a rival cotton industry in the 1880’s, which attracted many Irish workers from Lancashire and elsewhere. James Tymon, a cotton spinner, who was born in Burnley, is one of these casualties.
Some men came from very large families, such as, Edward Nozedar, one of thirteen children and William Snee, one of fourteen children.
The men worked in a variety of occupations, but were mostly manual labourers, dockers, bricklayers and factory workers. For example, Edward Henry Nozedar, worked for the Reckitt’s Cannister plant. Private, Harry Glover, worked for the Chambers and Fargus Oil Mills. Gunner, Alfred Henry Longworth, worked for the Eagle Oil Mills. The Walsh brothers, worked for the Lee Smith Oil Mills. Willam Snee, Alfred Newlove, Joseph Wood and Francis Grayson, all worked for the Blundell and Spence Paint works. John William Barlow and Michael Forkin, worked for the Earles’ Ship Building Yard.
Others came from more wealthier families. They include, Adrian and Bede Farrell, both brother Officers, who lived in leafy Newland Park, on the outskirts of Hull. They were sadly killed and died of wounds in the same attack. Lieutenant, Alan C. Clapham, 1/4th EYR, was a Chartered Accountant, from Wakefield, killed in Belgium in 1916, aged 21. Private, Richard Bodley Furley, was a Theological student studying at Mirfield College. Corporal, Bernard Henry McCormack, was training to be a Priest, at Usdaw College, before joining the 7th Royal Irish Rifles.
Some of the men had criminal records. For example, Joseph Ryan, was a convicted house breaker. Albert Ralph, came from a criminal family. Herbert Sidney Hick, was indicted for stealing a cheque book and postage stamps, aged 16. Sammy Steward, was imprisoned for three months for robbing his mother of clothes and later robbing his sister in law, of a pram, which he later sold. Also, James Naven, was a school truant, committed to a Lunacy Asylum in 1902 and pleaded guilty to a series of thefts from the North Eastern Railways, before he enlisted.
Other St Charles Borromeo men were sportsmen. For example, James McDonald and his brother Joseph Charles McDonald were both Champion Boxers, well known in Hull sporting circles. They each won their respective weights, at the Hull Boxing Championship, held at Beverley Road Baths, in March 1914. Similarly, Private, Henry Pepper, 6th EYR, won the Lightweight Boxing Competition, on the troopship, carrying 2,500 soldier, to Gallipoli. Private, Michael Forkin was also an athlete who had appeared before the King in a Gymnastic display.
Also, on the memorial were those commended for bravery. They include Edward Gould, Michael Lydon, who both received the Military Medal, Joseph William Bibby awarded the Belgium Croix De Guerre, and George Cox who was Mentioned in Dispatches.
There are many other stories that could be told about the men on the St Charles Borromeo memorial. Each man can be searched individually on this website. Whatever their backgrounds or motivations for joining, they did their duty when their country needed them and St Charles Borromeo made a magnificent War Memorial to remember their sacrifice. Here are some of their photos.
Note: In an era of hand written records, there are inevitably some errors and anomalies on war memorials that provide a long list of names. The St Charles Borromeo memorial is no exception. Crowl should be spelt Croll, Groake, should read Groak, Manlay is Manley, Deaken is Dakin, Graburn is Grayburn, McCormack is McCormick, Whyatt is Wyatt, and O’Hare is O’Hara. Similarly Costello and Clutterbrook are misspelt and A M Newlove is actually A L Newlove. J.E Washe, is actually Joseph Edward Walsh and E. Giblin is really Peter Giblin.. There are at least four men that cannot be positively identified on the Memorial, These are H. House and T.J. Knight, where there are no Census or local war pension records. Other popular surnames, like F. Smith and J. Smith, are too numerous to trace accurately. If you have their information, please let me know via ww1hull.com Thank You
