Allenby, William Thorley

Lance Corp. William Thorley Allenby, 7th CEF, 1st British Columbia Regiment.
Private George David Storey Allenby and his brother Lance Corporal William Thorley Allenby (seated), both killed 8th Sept 1916, at Monquet Farm near Courcelette, France. Both served with the 7th Battalion, British Columbia Regiment.

BORN HULL, ON  05/02/1896. SON OF DAVID ALLENBY (1842-1904) & ELLEN BROWN (1861-1950), OF 31 MAYFIELD STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS) & 7 PRINCES AVENUE, WHEELER STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND FOUR SISTERS. HE EMIGRATED TO CANADA AGED 18, WITH HIS BROTHER, GEORGE DAVID STOREY ALLENBY, IN 1913. THEY WORKED FOR THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY. HE LIVED AT, 1521 ALBERNI STREET, VANCOUVER.

HE ENLISTED WITH HIS BROTHER, GEORGE, IN 1914. BOTH SERVED IN THE 7TH CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE (1ST BRITISH COLUMBIA REGIMENT). HIS ELDER BROTHER, GEORGE ALLENBY, WAS KILLED BY THE SAME SHELL, SAME DAY, ON 08/09/1916. WILLIAM WAS WOUNDED IN THE HAND, BUT KILLED BY MACHINE GUN FIRE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 27TH OCTOBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*

WILLIAM IS COMMEMORATED ON THE VIMY WAR MEMORIAL, GIVENCHY, FRANCE. HIS BROTHER, GEORGE ALLENBY IS BURIED AT COURCELETTE BRITISH CEMETERY, FRANCE. BOTH BROTHERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE 12 NAMES, LISTED ON THE NORMAN PRIMITIVE METHORDIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL, UNVEILED, ON 6TH JUNE 1920.
