Smith, George Henry

BORN HULL 23/08/1878. SON OF HENRY & ELIZA SMITH, OF 59 EASTBOURNE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). DROWNED ON 20/04/1917, AGED 35. COMMEMORATED AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HMS Nepaulin was a British Royal Navy Paddle steamer which was requestioned by the Admiralty in 1915. She was formerly called Neptune SS. Nepaulin, was built by Napier, Shanks & Bell, Glasgow in 1892 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British auxiliary minesweeper of 314 tons. On April 20th, 1917, Nepaulin was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UB-12 (Ernst Steindorff), near the Dyck lightvessel. 19 persons were lost.
